“Cruel irony”: Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest, “where the security of Ukraine was guaranteed”.

Peter Zalmayev, director of the Eurasian Democratic Initiative, called the US decision to potentially provide Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine a welcome “escalation” that has clearly unsettled Vladimir Putin, even if it does not decisively alter the battlefield. Although the symbolism and strategic influence of this type of weapon are significant: they could allow Ukraine to carry out an asymmetric war, targeting Russia’s oil production and refining capacity, deepening its economic tension. Meanwhile, Putin bides his time and “being rewarded, unfairly” by Trump, with a meeting in a very symbolic European capital: Budapest, where, “in a cruel touch of irony”, in 1994 the US, UK and Russia guaranteed Ukraine’s security in exchange for nuclear disarmament.
