According to a recent report, India’s 36-year-old batting legend Virat Kohli is in the cards for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 is to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. South Africa will host 44 in eight venues, while Zimbabwe and Namibia will host the remaining 10 matches.
The wait for the return of the GOAT – Virat Kohli – to international cricket is about to end very soon. He will wear the Indian jersey for the first time since March 2025 in the upcoming series against Australia.

Sunday, October 19, will see the opening of the ODI series between India and Australia in Perth, and the next two matches will be hosted by Adelaide and Sydney on October 23 and 25.
Kohli is now a single-format player at international level, having retired from T20I cricket in 2024 and Test cricket earlier this year. Being an ODI player has significantly reduced Virat Kohli’s presence in international cricket as very few 50 overs are played these days.
At 36, Kohli is still in his prime and has received great backing from former cricketers to extend his ODI career and give himself a chance to feature in the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
However, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agrakar and head coach Gautam Gambhir hinted at Virat Kohli’s uncertain ODI future and urged him to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) to keep him in contention for the next 50-over World Cup.
Recently, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla stated that the Australia tour would not be Kohli’s farewell series, and now a senior Board of Control for Cricket in India official has said that modern batting is more or less on the agenda for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
“Breaking news: Virat Kohli very much in 2027 World Cup plan – BCCI’s top source,” News24 journalist Vaibhav Bhola wrote on X.

Virat Kohli scored 2451 ODI runs at an average of 54.46 against Australia, and in Australia he scored 1327 runs in 29 ODI matches at an average of 51.03.
Recently, speaking on a podcast shared by cricket.com.au, Kane Richardson recalled India’s ODI against Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2017, where Kohli scored 92 runs, making life hell for the Aussies in the scorching heat.
“I remember there was a game in Kolkata where it was so hot. Matty Wade (Matthew Wade) kept – I remember he literally threw up when I ran in. Zamps gave him a drink and I was like, ‘Someone ran into a bowl’, and Zamps says, ‘Patty, the bowler is in’. And he’s like, ‘I know’, still just sitting there.
“If the ball hit him, he’d just get up. We’re dead and he’ll cut one or two and run it like he’s on a treadmill in air conditioning,” Richardson added.
Richardson added that the Aussies were so tired that they couldn’t talk, and on the other hand, Kohli was on another level in terms of fitness. He said:
“You talk to everyone who was there that day – there’s footage of guys wearing ice chains, and no one had color in their face. No one was talking. If you got a goal, it was just complete silence because no one had any energy.”
“It’s not going to be one that sticks out to a lot of people in terms of being the most high-profile. But I just remember it being like — this guy is on a whole other level, no matter the situation.”
